Your salary range has a second audience: the people already on your payroll.
Picture this.
You post a range for a role on a team. Someone who has been on that team for years reads it.
Now they are doing math on their own pay. Not at the next review. Today.
Nobody tells you this is happening. You find out when the questions show up, or when a good person quietly updates their résumé.
Ranges are going public in more places. The pay conversations inside the company have to be ready first.
Before a range goes live, it helps to ask:
- Where do current employees sit against it?
- Can their manager explain why, in plain words?
- If not, what needs to change before it goes public?
When did a job ad you posted (or read) start a pay conversation inside the company?
